WORLD PRESS CONFERENCE ON DESERT WARRIOR ENDURANCE REALITY EXPEDITION 2009
BACKGROUND HISTORY

It will be an understatement that given the recent spate of natural disasters;tsunamis, global warming, earthquakes and hurricanes, one can conclude that these are warning signs that the end of the earth is very near. This reality can create fear and panic. It should however also awaken a desire by those who passionately care about the earth and its green status to do something; however little or seemingly late to save our dear beloved planet Earth!

FIGHT AGAINST DESERT ENCROACHMENT

FADE since its creation has been committed to the prevention and control of environmental degradation in Africa with emphasis on desert encroachment desertification and drought control. The first major project was in Makoda, Kano State, Nigeria in 2004 where the FADE Wall of trees was initiated with the planting of 10,000 seedlings. This exercise has been replicated in seven other locations in Kano State resulting in the healthy presence and growth of hundreds of thousands of three types of trees which now form a barrage to stop further desert encroachment. The trees are Nim trees which also serves as sun breakers, energy trees which when mature are used for firewood (and are replaced) and agricultural trees which can be used to make juices for consumption as well as soap. Boreholes are drilled to nurture the trees as well as the host communities. This is an on-going and expanding project with a very unique aspect of youth involvement, as school children are used to nurture the trees to inculcate in them the attitude of tree planting!
