Agadez, Niger

by admin Email

The Sahara in its entirety is bordered on the south by the beautiful desert city of Agadez. Casting a retrospective glance at the past, I see Agadez in the kaleidoscope of my mind's eye as a mosaic of bitter-sweet experiences, entwined with a combination of beauty and sublime horror.

It would surprise you to know that Agadez in the past under the influence of the French, this region was always considered as the line of Rubicon as soldiers consciously or unconsciously realize that there may be no return from battle.

But one cannot fail to acknowledge the fact that crossers of the desert like me are always overcome with an overwhelming sense of nostalgia when the name Agadez is mentioned. I have always hoped that one day Agadez will be the beginning of the south-west passage of the Trans-Saharan Highway.

One thing remains certain, it will the journey of a life time

The excerpt from your book has thrilled me beyond words, so vivid was the description that I can't wait to READ your book and join the expedition. It was as if I was right beside you....I am a road adventurer as well, travelling with European friends that come visiting our beloved continent within Nigeria and the West Coast, but of course my adventures surely pale into insignificance compared to yours. More thrilling is the quest for a greener future, as a professional in the environmental science sector, the importance is not lost on me, kudos to you, the combination of discovery, fun and service to humanity is indeed fantastic!!!

An expedition into the desert is not so small, owning to the facts and challenges therein, How ever it takes guts to venture into it. for an adventurous heart all these will remain fun.
As we all know the Deserts cover about one fifth of the Earth's surface and occur where rainfall is less than 50 cm/year. Although most deserts, such as the Sahara of North Africa and the deserts of the southwestern U.S., Mexico, and Australia, occur at low latitudes, another kind of desert, cold deserts, occur in the basin and range area of Utah and Nevada and in parts of western Asia. Most deserts have a considerable amount of specialized vegetation, as well as specialized vertebrate and invertebrate animals. Soils often have abundant nutrients because they need only water to become very productive and have little or no organic matter. Disturbances are common in the form of occasional fires or cold weather, and sudden, infrequent, but intense rains that cause flooding.

There are relatively few large mammals in deserts because most are not capable of storing sufficient water and withstanding the heat. Deserts often provide little shelter from the sun for large animals. The dominant animals of warm deserts are nonmammalian vertebrates, such as reptiles. Mammals are usually small, like the kangaroo mice of North American deserts.

Therefor it will be an adventure of a life time to witness all these at the Sahara firsthand.
